ARE WE GOING DOWN THE " ARBOUR AVENUE "?

"Protect Lanka," together with 7 other national organisations, held a press conference at "Sausiripaya" on 11th March 2008 at 02:00 pm with the participation of a number of intellectuals and professionals such as Prof. G. H. Peiris, Mr Gomin Dayasiri, Dr Gamini Gunatillake, Justice Raja Wanasundara, Mr S.L. Gunesekera, Dr (Mrs) Anula Wijesundara, Mr Piyasena Disanayake Dr Gunadasa Amereseka and Dr (Mrs) Hema Gunatillake.

Speaking at this press conference Mr Gomin Dayasiri said that the nature and the timing of reports submitted by Human Rights Watch, the International Commission of Jurists,  UN Human Rights Chief Louis Arbour, and UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowark all seem to be part of carefully planned strategy to implement R2P in Sri Lanka and halt military operations in order to save the LTTE.

Prof. Gerry Peiris addressing the media explaining the history of the R2P concept and argued that R2P is not applicable to Sri Lanka as there is no genocide, ethnic cleansing, or human rights violations in a magnitude that warrants any form of interference by foreign forces.

He added that the UN has absolutely no mandate to implement R2P as this is not a concept that been ratified by the UN but something that is being used as a method of colonisation by a few western countries.

Mr S. L. Gunasekera explained how all forms of foreign intervention failed in Sri Lanka , tracing the failures of Indian and Norwegian intervention and reiterated the only solution to eradicate terrorism was to militarily destroy them.

Dr Anula Wijesundara explained how normalcy had returned to the eastern province citing examples of how civilians who were terrorised under the LTTE regime of terror now engage agriculture and other normal activities of day to day life.

She also urged people not be misled by false propaganda carried out by the various agents of the International community such as NGO's, who are part of the greater scheme to show the world that a massive crisis exists in these areas to justify foreign intervention such as proposed by Louis Arbour.

Dr Gamini Gunatillake explained that he was at the hearings conduced by the Independent International Group of Eminent Persons, and pointed out that the procedures were questionable and that their integrity and independence severly compromised.  He further questioned as to whose interests they were really representing and that it is obvious they were part of the global conspiracy to intervene in Sri Lanka .

Dr Hema Gunatillake spoke about the Cambodian example of UN intervention where she herself had been a part of the UN contingent and how Cambodia still remains totally foreign dependent for sustenance whereas all countries around her have developed leaps and bounds.

Dr Piyasena Dissanayke said that certain quarters were using the Kosovo example to threaten and intimidate the Government to accede to the demands of terrorists and the designs of certain international forces.

Col. Anil Amarasekera explained the strategic economic reasons why some of the foreign forces are trying to interfere in Sri Lanka 's internal affairs. Dr Piyasena Dissanaye wrapped up the conference by calling upon the Government and the people of Sri Lanka to resist these designs by various foreign forces Sri Lankans and to destroy terrorism completely in the effort to bring peace back Sri Lanka .
