Mini Hydro Mafia has so far destroyed over 50 waterfalls in Sri Lanka including the beautiful Eli Hatha in Sri Pada Sanctuary. During the last two weeks, the Mini Hydro Developers Association held 2 closed door talks with President Maithripala Sirisena to obtain permission to destroy more waterfalls, streams and rivers. According to Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka 2016 report on generation performance, Mini-Hydro plants had a mere 20% plant factor (i.e. operating only at 20% capacity) due to drought conditions. The 180+ mini hydros operating along the wet zone rivers, streams and waterfalls contributed just 60 MW to the National Grid, which is less than 2% of the National Demand. Agriculture and Tourism sectors have been hit hard due to lack of sufficient water and destruction of scenic locations. Villagers are suffering due to lack of water for their basic needs as the mini-hydro plants divert the streams through concrete channels for several kilometers. Many endemic and point-endemic freshwater species are going Extinct!!!
