We are on the brink of a groundbreaking moment in conservation history. On March 1, 2024, Sri Lanka will witness the commencement of a landmark project at Getadiwula, Galgamuwa—the construction of the country's first Wildlife Underpass. This initiative is set to create a safe pathway for a herd of 200 elephants, allowing them to cross beneath the railway line, thereby safeguarding our precious wildlife heritage.
This pioneering project marks a significant stride towards integrating infrastructure development with the imperative of wildlife conservation. Born out of a collaborative effort among Protect Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Transport, the Department of Railways, the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB), and IRCON International Limited, the Wildlife Underpass signifies the power of partnership and the potential for harmonious coexistence between human progress and wildlife preservation.
The groundbreaking ceremony not only celebrates the initiation of this crucial conservation effort but also embodies the collective commitment of our community towards the conservation of Sri Lanka's majestic wildlife. This event is a vivid illustration of what can be achieved when government, non-profit organizations, and the community unite in support of a common goal.
The Wildlife Underpass at Getadiwula, Galgamuwa, is a beacon of hope in a region known for frequent train-elephant collisions, offering a sustainable solution to a long-standing challenge. It is a part of the broader Mahawa - Anuradhapura Railway Rehabilitation Project, underscoring our commitment to modernizing infrastructure while prioritizing the safety and well-being of wildlife.
