Welcome to the Getadiwula Reforestation Project, a vital initiative under the Rethink HEC campaign by Protect Sri Lanka. Our mission is to address the critical human-elephant conflict (HEC) in the Getadiwula area of Galgamuwa by transforming the Getadiwula Forest Plantation into a sustainable habitat for elephants.
Reforesting harvested areas within the Getadiwula Forest Plantation to provide natural food sources for elephants.
Reconstructing two abandoned tanks in the Getadiwula Forest Reserve to supply water for elephants, reducing their need to venture into nearby villages.
Creating grasslands with elephant fodder plants near water resources will make it the perfect elephant oasis.
The Getadiwula Forest Reserve, currently dominated by teak and kaya trees, fails to provide sufficient food for the approximately 200-350 wild elephants seeking refuge here. This lack of natural fodder and water forces elephants to raid nearby villages, escalating conflicts with local communities. By reforesting these areas with elephant-friendly flora and reconstructing vital water sources, we aim to create a self-sustaining habitat for elephants within the forest, minimizing their need to encroach on human settlements.
The Getadiwula Reforestation Project promises multiple benefits:
Mitigating Human-Elephant Conflict: By providing elephants with adequate food and water within the forest, we reduce their need to enter human settlements, decreasing the likelihood of conflicts.
Ensuring Elephant Welfare: A well-managed habitat ensures the health and well-being of the elephant population, promoting their natural migratory behaviors.
Boosting Local Economy: Eco-tourism opportunities and community involvement in conservation efforts help uplift the local economy while fostering a sense of pride and ownership in conservation efforts.
Protect Sri Lanka recognizes the importance of local community involvement in conservation efforts. Through consultations and collaborations with local stakeholders during our wildlife underpass project, we have tailored our reforestation and water tank construction plans to meet both ecological and community needs. This holistic approach ensures a harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants, safeguarding the future of both.
We invite you to be a part of the Getadiwula Reforestation Project. Together, we can create a sustainable future where elephants and humans thrive in harmony. Learn more about our initiatives and how you can contribute to this transformative project.
