Getadiwula Reforestation Project
🗓️ 18th - 21st December 2024
Phase I of the “Elephant Oasis – Getadiwula Reforestation Project” was successfully carried out in collaboration with several key partners and the local community. The initiative was led by Protect Sri Lanka (PSL), which oversaw project planning, organization, and coordination. MAS Bodyline sponsored the procurement of plant saplings, provided financial support for food and transportation, and engaged its employees as on-ground volunteers. Additional volunteer support came from Bellana Maha Vidyalaya, a school in the Kalutara district, and Nature Nerds, a local environmental group based in the Galgamuwa area. Members of the Getadiwula village community also participated, demonstrating strong local engagement and ownership of the project.
Under the supervision of Mr. Rajapaksha, the Range Forest Officer (RFO) of the Galgamuwa range forest office, and his staff, volunteers removed invasive species—primarily “Siam weed” (Eupatorium odoratum)—from a one-acre portion of the forest. This process took two full days, ensuring that native vegetation could flourish without competition. The subsequent task of digging holes required one day, while planting 150 saplings took another day.
Overall, Phase I’s achievements highlight the power of collaborative conservation. By uniting environmental organizations, local schools, community members, and corporate sponsors, the project successfully reclaimed an acre of forest from invasive species and laid the groundwork for the growth of newly introduced saplings—an important first step toward restoring a sustainable habitat for elephants and other wildlife.
